Thanks to @mfysentzou for raising this topic at the last DEUSG meeting.
We are looking to identify practical and sustainable approaches to Route of Administration alignment and interoperability requirements between SNOMED-CT and EDQM standards, including the potential role of mappings where required. This is to support interoperability across countries using different standards for Route of Administration.
The discussion highlighted real-world examples regarding Route of Administration alignment in the context of EHDS requirements and cross-border services in Europe, but is likely relevant beyond Europe also.
Do members have a requirement for SNOMED/EDQM map for Routes of Administration?
Are other standards used at country level for Routes of Administration that should be considered/accounted for?
Have any members completed any alignment work in this area to date? Challenges/Successes?
Hi Shane,
The UK Drug Extension via the NHS dictionary of medicines and devicese (dm+d) mainly aligns with EDQM for routes.
This is in the dm+d Editorial Policy:
Editorial Policy: VMP route will consist of European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare (EDQM) Standard Terms as below. Where an appropriate EDQM term is not available these are identified as ‘Other’.
We list the routes of administration used in Appendix VI of the dm+d Editorial Policy. A minority of these are not derived from the EDQM.
The UK does not have a specific requirement for a formal map between SNOMED CT and EDQM.
We do not have any specific local standards we can point to.
We have broadly aligned with EDQM, with some additional routes, as above.
We mapped the Routes in the Belgian authentic source, in EDQM and with SNOMED, with still a few unresolved issues. I had brought the question at DEUSG a year ago. I would be happy if we could somehow finalize this and have the mapping at international level. I can’t attach an excel file in this thread but I can email it to whoever wants it.

No

FHIR AU Core route of administration is bound to https://healthterminologies.gov.au/fhir/ValueSet/route-of-administration-1 which is SNOMED CT

We analysed EDQM and route of administration when designing AMT v4, but we don’t have a requirement for a mapping/alignment

FHIR HL7 US Realm Program Management Route of Administration is bound to Value Set Authority Center , which is SNOMED CT. Includes all SNOMED CT values descending from 284009009 route of administration value.

While the NLM/US NRC has not completed any alignment work in this area, other US government agencies outside the US NRC may have performed alignment work with EDQM. One example is our Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Dosage Form and Route of Administration | FDA
